I was born in St. Louis, MO. while my Dad was attending Dental School at St. Louis University. My mom taught school in the "ghetto" to pay the bills and for Dad's schooling.
We moved to La Salle, CO when I was very young, where my Dad started his practice. When I was 5, we moved to the 'farm', where I actually live today.
After graduation from Valley High School in 1983, I attended the University of Northern Colorado on a football scholarship, and studied Exercise Physiology. During that time I was a partner in Mikes' Gym in La Salle. I miss that little gym!
Mikes' Gym is where I actually became interested in bodybuilding while re-habbing a knee surgery from a football injury. Some of the guys I trained with were Ron Rieken, Steve Schafer, Chris Fisher, Brad Prothe and Brad Amen. These guys were some of the best bodybuilders in the state of Colorado of that time...Thanks Guys!!
In December 1985 I moved to Phoenix, AZ, where I started competing in the sport of bodybuilding. I trained at World Gym in Scottsdale, AZ. under the guidance of an Arizona bodybuilding legend, Myron Larabee. I trained with some of the greatest bodybuilders of that era. After a couple of second places, I finally won the "Arizona" in November of 1987.
In 1988 I moved to Jacksonville, FL, to help open 5 new gyms. I was training for the Mr. East Coast, but broke my ankle goofing around on the beach. Being uninsured, I had to come back to Colorado to get the medical attention I needed.
After my injury was healed, I moved back to Arizona and started working for Bally's Health Clubs, where I was a sales manager for 4 years. Bally's upper management taught me so much about the management end of the Health Club Industry. I am still using these skills as a Health Club Consultant today.
In April 1991, I started my own clothing business called "Xander-Wear". I manufactured my own active wear line, and eventually got into screen printing and embroidery. I ran that business for 16 years and sold it in 2008.
In 2006 I was challenged to come out of a 19 year retirement from bodybuilding, so I started training for the "Rocky". In November of 2006 I entered the contest and won the Masters 40-45, Masters Overall, Open Heavyweight, and Overall Show. Maybe I should retire more often!
My next contest was going to be Masters Nationals in 2007, but I peaked early so entered the "Colorado" the week before Nationals and won Masters 40-45, Masters Overall, and Open heavyweight. I guess I dehydrated myself a little too much and had to spend a couple of days getting IV's, so I had to bow out of Nationals that year.
As soon as I was healthy, I started training for Masters Nationals in 2008. I went to Pittsburgh in July, 2008, and placed 10th in the Heavyweight class.
In April, 2008, Carol Semple and I started working on Infinite Sports USA, and here we are!
